Whose Dress Is It Anyway?
Over a Month Later, Glenview's Classy Clothing Find Remains A Mystery

Some very personal items end up at the Glenview Park District's lost and found.
Glasses and cell phones are regulars on the list, but sometimes the park district finds something so different, so personal, it's hard to believe someone could leave it behind.
Early this year, the park district found a wedding dress.
"We have no idea where it came from," said the district's Executive Director Chuck Balling. In his 25-year-career, "this was one of the strangest things I had ever heard... We are all puzzled on how it ended up on our property."
Groundskeeper Tony Garcia found the dress, with a veil, in a garbage bag under a bridge behind Park Center, 2500 Chestnut Ave on Jan. 2.
Knowing the park district regularly hosted weddings, the groundskeeper took the dress to Karen Paszkiewicz, of Catered by Design, the district's only catering company housed inside Park Center.
She then called her last few clients, saying she had found a wedding dress and wondered if it had been any one of theirs.
"I just kind of assumed they'd changed and they were in a hurry to the airport," said Paszkiewicz.
Nope.
Got mine.
Sorry.
The mystery of the wedding dress then began.
"There's a lot of jokes of what could have happened," said Paszkiewicz. "I've been in the business a long time" and have never dealt with a missing wedding dress, she said.
The dress, barely damp, was likely outside for only a few days, said Paszkiewicz. It was clean save a few select batches of dirt probably from its time outside.
The long, size 10 white dress valued between $800 and $1,000 now hangs in the Catered by Design office, waiting for someone to pick it up.
Tom Kolk, the park district's risk manager said he's holding out for the true owner to reclaim it and help solve the mystery.
He said three brides and one cleaner attempted to claim the dress, but after seeing pictures realized the dress was not theirs.
Paszkiewicz was surprised something like this would happen to a wedding dress since many women like to stow theirs away after the wedding.
"Most brides, after their wedding, have their dress cleaned and put in a keep sake box," she said.
Kolk holds out hope that someone will claim the dress even though they've had it for a month and a half.
"Personally, it's got to belong to somebody," he said.
The dress has received some notoriety, attracting national news coverage from FOX this month. Even after the segment aired, no one came by to collect the dress.
In the event no one claims the bridal gown, the debate becomes what to do with it.
Kolk said it could go to any one of several charitable organizations, like a local theater guild, a breast cancer fund, a battered women's shelter or an impoverished local girl to use for a prom dress. He said the park district hasn't made any decisions on where the dress would go or how it would choose.
He likened the owner losing the dress to someone leaving their coffee mug on the top of their car as they drive off to work.
The theories are endless. Maybe the couple or a cleaner laid the dress on top of a car and drove off without it. Maybe the bride threw it out after a nasty divorce. Maybe she just had cold feet.
"For every one that I come up with, you can come up with five or ten more," said Kolk.
For now, Kolk said he wants to sit and wait for a few more weeks, even months before deciding the dress' fate.

This story has been on the local and national news-plus it has been picked by by several blogs. So, now the question is---why doesn't the bride come forward? How come no one -bridesmaids or wedding guests recognizes the thing? (Oh, and I want the name of the dry cleaner- just why was he there?)

My take--Perhaps she was given the dress (by someone out of town who was expecting she wear it) but hated it and tossed it rather than being forced to wear it. Then she claims it was stolen.Just a thought.
