Embracing My Inner Chick

Okay, you are reading the blog of a gal who counts among her favorite books Behind the Mask of Innocence: A Guide to Social Reform Films in the Silent Era Hey, I've read it at least six times! But now that I work at the library I have found that my second favorite job (right after my time at the reference desk) is checking in the new books.

That's where I first got a good look at ChickLit. It's easy to spot- pastel covers (usually pink), heroines in high heels, and cute titles. So I have given a few of them a try. To be honest sometimes the cover and title are the only entertaining features of the book but once in a while I have found a winner and plan on passing them on. They are mindless fun to be tossed in your beach bag or read on the deck while sipping a Flirtini.

May Day by Jess Lourey. Mira James goes back to her hometown of Battle Lake, Minnesota to work in a library (wonder why I picked this one, huh?) She starts a romance with the former high school quarterback who has also returned to town on a business trip. Only problem- he turns up dead....in the library. A breezy whodunit.

Your Big Break byJohanna Edwards. Dani Edwards works for a company that breaks up relationships for you (sounds like a great idea to me!) Things take a strange turn when she starts to fall for one of her dumpees. Then a young woman asks Dani to handle the breakup with her boyfriend. Turns out its Dani's still married father.

Undead and Unemployed by MaryJanice Davidson. Betsy Taylor (actually Elizabeth Taylor) is the newly risen vampire. Turns out she is also the newly made Queen of the Vampires. Complete with one very sexy consort named Eric Sinclair. She says she hates Eric but we all know better. In order to make ends meet Betsy gets her dream job- selling designer shoes at Macy's ...nights only. Just as she is starting to adjust to her new way of life, someone starts killing vampires in St. Paul (wonder what it is about Minnesota and chicklit). As Queen, its her job to find and stop the killers. This book is much lighter than it sounds. Betsy has a fast mouth and the author does a good job keep up the pace- plus the hot scene between Betsy and Eric is a nice bonus. (Second part of a series)
